About Supplies

Having materials you crave using, like a favorite colored pencil, can make sketching much more enjoyable. But NOT having a special supply is no reason not to get sketching. Truly all you need is a pen and a sheet of paper. Be sure you experiment with what you have around the house before you buy new art supplies.

Here are some of the art supplies I used in the demo and that I frequently use when I am sketching.

  • A giant clip board allows you to start a project and come back to it later. You can find a big drawing board for under $25. Here are 2: Michaels or Blick

  • I really like having a big pad of hot press (think not textured) like this watercolor paper on hand.

    And this is currently my favorite sketchbook.

    Nice paper enhances both making and the output.

  • I work on paper taped to an art board and the wall all the time. I tape sheets of paper up with drafting tape which has a strong but removable adhesive. You can also experiment with blue, painter’s tape from any hardware store for similar success.

  • Waterproof India Ink is a fun material for painting in black and white. You can make washes.

    My favorite pencil is a matte blackwing (you can buy them individually at an art store for about $2) and I draw most often with a Uniball vision fine pen which is waterproof.

  • Gouache is like a chalky and opaque watercolor. This media dries quickly and can be layered to get potent color. It is a great tool for sketching and learning to paint. I adore traditional gouache (NOT acrylic gouache) because you can reanimate it after it dries. I use Holbein and Windsor Newton brands.

    Here is a mixing, starter set by my favorite brand.

  • Prisma Colored pencils have become a staple in my studio. I have tried other brands and still love these best. They are creamy, and can be layered with each other or on top of gouache and other media. You don’t need a bit set, just a hand-full of favorite colors to have fun

    My very favorite is Poppy Red PC922.
