First Thaw

Original Oil Painting

Materials: Oil on canvas, professionally framed in hardwood

Dimensions: Painting 30 x 40 x 1.5”

Completed: 2024

About: Baby Freddie and I walked the lake early in March 2023. The wind was freezing, but the light and the moisture in the air proved the season was shifting. Geese came up close asking for bread. I started this painting with photos from that day…. but later lost the reference image. I was forced to adjust the composition again, and again to find resolution.

The piece was completed in phases over many months. And it became a personal reminder that with time, I have the lens for watching my own seasons shift. I let go of a lot of things in the time that this piece was created. In the end it marked a change of seasons in nature and a personal thaw. It is part of my Pieces of Eden series.
