favorites II: podcasts
Podcasts and wi - - ne with foreign dishes, tide pooling in Maine, free babysitters, and coffee so - - oo delicious, these are a few of my favorite things.
I love to learn but I don’t have a good reading habit. Listening to content while my hands are busy is one of my favorite things to do. And I think because I grew up in a noisy house with criss-crossing conversations at the dinner table, absorbing information from conversation and storytelling just works for me.
As for the kind of content I like, I have binged murder podcasts, SERIAL, and some lighter-hearted entertainment podcasts in the past. But the stuff that I stick to and return to is long-form interviews with creators (of all kinds) and scientists. I like programs even better when I get to hear candid personal routines and struggles in addition to any novel ideas. This is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, and this is certainly too much of a preamble… so without further adieu here is a collection of my favorite podcast listens from 2022.
Here is a link to a playlist of all of them on Spotify, but you can find them all for free online. Their individual, native links are below <3
* a few notes: Some of these have language unsuitable for kids. Also some of these aired long before 2022 but I found and loved them more recently.
Enjoy!
You’ve probably heard this program on NPR. I just dig it. Here are two episodes have re-listened to many times. They are just that good.
Another gem that I found on NPR long ago. This is all about spirituality and living meaningful lives. The episodes below are a few that I listen to over and over again.
Joanna Macy and Anita Barrows ‘What a world you’ve got inside you.’ on their new translation of Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet
I’ve been listening weekly to Andy J. Pizza’s podcast which is monologues and interviews at the intersection of creativity and business practices since 2016. Truly. I look forward to it. It is a soup of silly and sincere that I find very motivating. Here are a few of my favorite episodes:
360 - For When You Feel Like Giving Up (Return to ART ISLAND)
275 - How Seeing Personal Brand as Self Actualization Changes Everything with Michelle Poler
244 - Where Your Most Powerful Creative Work is Hiding with Frannerd!!
This is a podcast from Seth Godin. He is a marketer and really, a philosopher. I think he has pithy and insightful ideas on marketing, culture, and working.
I’m a knowledge project junkie… but Whit considers this podcast a wall of talking. The whole premise is to learn from experts. So the topic range widely. I have tons of favorites. I go back to episodes all the time. Here are a few I totally got into. I find there are always nuggets to use and ways to expand my thinking and sometimes my worldview. A good way to see if it is for you is to check out the end of year summary episodes: 2022 and 2021
Nir Eyal: Mastering Indistraction [The Knowledge Project Ep. #104] on mindset and productivity
Tobi Lütke: Calm Progress [The Knowledge Project Ep. #152] exciting perspectives on technology
Kunal Shah: Core Human Motivations [The Knowledge Project Ep. #141] great insights on human behavior and a delightful glimpse into some Indian culture
Neil Pasricha: Simple Rules for Happiness [The Knowledge Project Ep. #149] so juicy.
Tim is a character and promotes an intense lifestyle- be prepared to fast forward through the sponsor blurbs. But I must say, he introduces me to fascinating people with his interviews. I go in and out of getting into this podcast. Below are two great conversations.
This American Life and Design Matters deserve links here too because I listen to them HEAVILY. But I feel like stopping here for a breath. If you have good podcast recommendations, won’t you please share them back to me? I’d love that. Thanks!
