About: While painting large scale portraits of saints, I found myself attempting to pin down inspiration and motivation. There is that illusive, free-flowing breed of inspiration who sings you into the studio and helps you launch a new endeavor with your eyes closed. And when she leaves, you are forced to summon her cruel, and stubborn sister. You entice her with coffee, routines, prayers, self-talk, and an endless number of tricks just so she can lead you to an endpoint. Miraculously, I came across Juergen Teller’s photo of Karl Ove Knausgård’s desk during a wrestling match with inspiration. I imagined him sitting there and laboring over his My Struggle (Min Kamp) series. His desk and ashtray had a golden glow that was very reminiscent of the halos I was painting. It was too interesting, too funny, and too real to ignore. So I contacted Juegen Teller’s agent and asked for permission to paint his photograph.
This is the result.
