June 2024
making tree rings
I have been stopping at a mulberry tree on my jog to enjoy picking and eating fruit. I love how it stains my hands and reminds me of picking for my mom’s pies as a kid.
Trees have me thinking about how our actions build up over time. Tree ring after tree ring, I am building my life and my art practice. I was reminded that although I am very much at the beginning of my career as an artist, I have amassed some work. A curator recently poured through it for a show that will go up in September and chose this 2016, five foot tall painting of St. Cecelia for the show’s promotional poster. The work I did 8 years ago is still serving me somehow. What a treat.

I am sending a greeting card reproduction of this beauty to you this June along with some bandaids, because the morning jog, even with mulberries on the way is hard. My new running shoes give me a blister every single day. But “hard” isn’t the same as “bad,” and I hope this month’s mailing is a little encouragement to you to keep up the good work for the long haul.
Sending it all with love, as always,
-Liz
